What defines the golden-hour look

• Warm, glowing rim light. Edges of hair, grass, and objects catch a bright golden outline when backlit.

Step 1 — Start from a warm film preset

Step 2 — Warm the color deliberately

Push white balance toward the warm end so the frame gains that golden temperature. Then open the color wheels: send the highlights toward orange-gold to mimic sun hitting the scene, and nudge the midtones warm as well. Keep the shadows only slightly warm or neutral — if the shadows go too orange the image looks like a flat filter rather than real directional sunlight. That contrast between warm highlights and cooler shadows is what makes the light feel like it's coming from a direction.

Step 3 — Lift the shadows for that hazy glow

Golden hour is low-contrast and slightly hazy. Open the tone curve and lift the bottom-left point so the shadows open up and go a little milky — this is the "glow" that makes the look feel dreamy and warm rather than crisp. Keep the highlights bright but not clipped. Aim for an airy, open feel. Step 4 — Keep skin sun-kissed, not orange

The trap with any warm look is orange skin. Use HSL to protect it: if faces are drifting too far toward orange, pull the orange channel's saturation back a little and nudge its hue slightly toward yellow for a golden — rather than sunburned — glow. Lifting the orange luminance a touch adds radiance. The goal is skin that looks like it's catching evening light, healthy and warm but still natural.

Step 5 — Add bloom and fine grain

Now the finishing glow. A subtle halation makes bright edges — rim-lit hair, a sunlit horizon, backlit leaves — bloom softly, which is exactly how golden light behaves through a lens. Keep it gentle. A very light warm light leak at one edge can also enhance the sun-flare feel if it suits the shot. Then add a small amount of fine grain to unify everything and keep it filmic. Amplify what you shot, don't invent it
